Closing Reception Presented by Track 16 Gallery
Saturday, August 4, 2007 (7p-10p)

SANTA MONICA, CA– Track 16 Gallery is proud to present a special Closing Reception for one of this summer’s most talked about exhibitions, “The Secret Life of Cows” Photographs by Glen Wexler, on Saturday, August 4, at Bergamot Station’s Track 16 Gallery in Santa Monica. The Reception will feature a discussion, Understanding the New Creative Realities of Photography… or Why Cows Don’t Play Baseball moderated by Debra Weiss with special guests Glen Wexler and renowned photography gallerist and curator, G Ray Hawkins.

The exhibition, on view now through August 4, 2007 features large-scale prints of images from Wexler’s newly published book, The Secret Life of Cows. In these images, Wexler fuses photographic reality with fantasy to capture these death-defying bovines as secret agents and superheroes in imaginative and absurd situations where cows ineptly attempt to defend their species. The book, which will be available for purchase through the duration of the exhibition, includes a foreword by Monty Python/Spamalot’s Eric Idle, who professes to “know a bit about cows in comedy.”

The Secret Life of Cows has been praised by the Los Angeles Times, NBC News, Los Angeles Magazine, AmericanPHOTO and many others. Among the many celebrities and art world luminaries in attendance at the full house opening, pop culture artist John Van Hamersveld quipped, “These prints are juicy couture for cows.”

Celebrated for creating hundreds of imaginative and elaborate album covers for artist such as Michael Jackson, Van Halen, Black Sabbath, and ZZ Top, Wexler was among the original artists to blend digital imaging technology with the creative process and is credited as a worldwide leader in the field. Tim Wride, Curator of Photography for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), and executive director of No Strings Foundation says of Glen: “Wexler’s pictorial constancy as a risk taker and his deftness as a problem solver are the characteristics that distinguish his work and make his images both meaningful and memorable.” This is Wexler’s second solo exhibition in Los Angeles.

Understanding the New Creative Realities of Photography… or Why Cows Don’t Play Baseball
A conversation with Glen Wexler and G Ray Hawkins moderated by Debra Weiss

After attending the opening reception for Glen Wexler: The Secret Life of Cows, renowned photography gallerist and curator, G Ray Hawkins reflected, “The same way that Yves Tanguy, Max Ernst and Marcel Duchamp created nonsensical narration and thoroughly enjoyed successfully pulling our legs, photographers can now cut and paste their ideas the same way painters cut and paste ideas from their imagination to canvas, all for the purpose of creating a narrative and telling a story. This is a cohesive body of work. Glen with his surrealist attitude is really having fun with us.”

Wicked Awesome (exploding) Cows

The good guys over at WICKED AWESOME FILMS have just posted a viral video for THE SECRET LIFE OF COWS.
Though the short film (read: really funny mock ad) features spontaneously combusting bovine, we assure you no cows were harmed in the making of THIS VIDEO

A Brief History of Cows in Photography…Literally

The bovine species has long contributed life and limb to the photography and filmmaking arts. From beautifully scenic prairie expanses of cattle grazing uninhabited hillsides to the intensity of man versus beast in the bullfighting rings of Spain or the bull riding circuits of North and South America, our fascination with the awkwardly beautiful ruminant creatures is ironically archived on film by their own hides, hooves and ligaments.

We can’t seem to find any documentation on when exactly gelatin was invented. We hazard to guess humans have been boiling cattle parts since the beginning of time (or at least since the advent of fire). What we do know is inventor, mogul, and chemical engineer Peter Cooper established the first patent for manufacturing gelatin in 1845, which he later sold to the Wait family in 1895 and viola Jell-O was born. You know, on that note, why is “red” considered a flavor? Like when you go to a restaurant and they give you Jell-O options of lime or orange (note: a color AND a flavor) or red-- what is “red” exactly? We digress...

Then in 1871 Dr. Richard Maddox began using gelatin as a base ingredient of photographic plates, known as “dry plates” (inevitably eliminating the difficult and highly specialized Collodian process). The rest is photographic history as our emulsified bovine friends to this day preserve our “Kodak moments” on film and print.

Isn’t it fitting then to create a book that celebrates, if not relishes the curious and whimsical bovine?! We sure think so. And so, we present to you Glen Wexler’s “The Secret Life of Cows”: A fantastical collection of over 30 photo-illustrations depicting otherwise docile creatures making “their innermost fantasies come true” as Superheroes and Secret Agents in high-risk action and adventure scenarios, where ineptly as they may, attempt to preserve their species.

Go Digital…It’s cow friendly!

Welcome to the Secret Life of Cows...
